What TikTaal is

TikTaal is a Dutch language learning app for expats in the Netherlands. It is operated from the Netherlands. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, and what we do with it.

Data we collect

Account information

If you create an account, we store your email address and name. Accounts are optional. You can use TikTaal without signing up.

Learning progress

For guests, progress (completed scenarios, vocabulary review state, speaking practice count) is stored in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device. If you sign in, progress syncs to our database so it works across devices.

Email capture

After completing a scenario, guest users may enter their email to receive updates. This is entirely optional. We store your email with a record of the consent text you agreed to and a timestamp. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link.

Payment information

Payments are handled by Stripe. We do not store credit card numbers or bank details. Stripe shares your payment status (active, cancelled) with us so we can manage your subscription. Stripe's own privacy policy applies to the payment data they collect.

How we use your data

We use your data to:

• Let you pick up where you left off
• Track vocabulary review schedules
• Process payments and manage subscriptions
• Send updates if you opted in via email capture

We do not sell your data. We do not run ads. We do not use your data for marketing unless you explicitly opted in through the email capture form.

Analytics

We use Simple Analytics for website analytics. Simple Analytics does not use cookies, does not track individual users, and does not collect personal data. It is GDPR-compliant by design. We see aggregate page views and events (like "scenario started" or "pricing page viewed"), not individual user behaviour.

Third parties

• Stripe processes payments. They receive your payment details directly. See Stripe's privacy policy.
• Simple Analytics provides cookie-free, anonymous website analytics. No personal data is shared.

We do not share your data with anyone else.

Cookies and localStorage

TikTaal does not set tracking cookies. We use an authentication session cookie if you sign in. localStorage is used to save your learning progress, UI preferences, and dismissal states. None of this data is sent to third parties.

Data storage

Account data, progress, and subscription status are stored in a PostgreSQL database. Guest data stays in your browser. We take standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls on our database.

Data retention

We keep your account data as long as your account is active. Email capture entries are kept until you unsubscribe. If you delete your account, we delete your data.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data. You can also request a copy of your data or ask us to stop processing it.

To make a request, contact us via our contact form. We will respond within 30 days.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page.
